Edible crabs are reddish brown in colour, which explains why they are also known as brown crabs. The lower surface is yellowish and the ends of the claws are dark, tending towards black. These crabs can be found along the entire Dutch coast. They can reach a width of between 20 and 30 cm when they are about 12 years old. The species is not endangered.
