Cultivation

We cultivate most of our mussels and oysters ourselves. For our oysters, we use special beds in the Eastern Scheldt and the Grevelingenmeer. Our mussels grow in beds in the Wadden Sea and in the Eastern Scheldt, two areas with the healthiest water conditions in Europe.

Mussel cultivation begins with the harvesting of mussel seeds (mini mussels). This happens twice a year. The mussel seed is then transferred to cultivation plots, where they take around 2½ years to develop into adult mussels.

For oyster cultivation, oyster spat is required (mini oysters). Oyster spat is produced once a year. Nature determines when that happens. The more spat which lands on your beds the better. For this reason, empty mussel shells are placed on the beds to collect the oyster spat.

Oyster spat takes 3 to 4 years to develop into adult oysters.

While they are growing, the mussels and oysters are sometimes moved from one bed to another.
